Birmingham City University (BCU) Research and Enterprise is on the big screen through an innovative cinematic artwork at Somerset House in London.

On The Other Earth is a virtual dance performance presented inside a wraparound 360-degree 3D screen, using a range of technologies to bring performances and audiences together.

Ravi Deepres, Professor of Moving Image and Photography at BCU, has been one of the key artists and researchers involved.

He has worked with director and choreographer Sir Wayne McGregor CBE, lighting designer Theresa Baumgartner, Professor Jeffrey Shaw (Hong Kong Baptist University) and the Hong Kong Ballet company to bring this artwork to life.

“This project represents a potential future of cinema and performance, pushing the boundaries of immersive technology with truly sensory physical experience,” said Professor Deepres.

“Working together with partners across the world and disciplines has shown how this type of collaboration can create extraordinary experiences for performers and audiences, connecting people to new artistic mediums.

“It has huge potential outside of this installation, to be used in healthcare and mental health support to create immersive environments.”

The project radically innovates the use of technologies such as AI multi-point sound, 360 film capture and Lidar scanning.

Audiences are also able to view 3D imagery without VR headsets within a huge 26-million-pixel screen that stands up to four metres tall.

Through an unforgettable virtual experience, the installation offers a unique way for physical audiences and virtual performers to engage together by breaking the ‘4th wall’.

On The Other Earth premiered at the Venice Biennale in July 2025 to critical acclaim and has since received praise from international media, with the Financial Times describing it as “extremely discombobulating and utterly amazing.”

Following its London run, the installation will tour globally, with planned presentations in Hong Kong, Berlin and the United States.

On The Other Earth is on display at Somerset House until 22 February 2026, tickets are available to purchase through the Somerset House website.
